Formula 1 Events department approached Sport Science Agency to develop an experience that enabled F1 fans to understand the incredible abilities of the worlds’ best racing drivers.

Formula 1 Driver Fitness became part of the F1 Fanzone providing a unique interactive experience for ticket holders around the world. It allowed fans to test their abilities and compare them with F1 drivers throughout the race weekend.

Working with Formula 1 and its Fanzone partner Events House, Sport Science Agency developed an experience for fans that drew on expert knowledge of the mental and physical demands of F1 racing.

BACKGROUND

Formula 1 Driver Fitness was split into two sections, a museum style area where fans learned about the demands of F1 racing followed by an interactive zone where they underwent tests to understand their own capabilities.

In the museum section, sport scientists educated fans on the challenges faced by F1 drivers including coping with heat, dehydration, and G-force. They then contextualised the physical training required to safely cope with the demands of the sport.

After the museum area, fans could continue into the testing area where they would be led through three interactive tests by sport scientists;

Fitness Test

Finally a sub-maximal fitness test provided a good overview of general fitness, an area that gains considerable focus among drivers and their teams.

The results were then combined in order to give fans a comparison with their F1 heroes. After their tests, each participant was provided with a debrief with a sport scientist to help them understand their own capabilities and give them an opportunity to ask an expert any questions they have. Each participant also received a digital memento showing their score in comparison to an F1 driver.

THE RESULTS

In a sport decided by fractions of a percent, only two out of the total of 22,329 people who took part got within 10% of a F1 driver, further confirming just how good F1 drivers really are. Both were elite level racing drivers in their own right!
